FAST DOWNS

This is a game, so make it fun for both you and your dog!

Tools:

  • Your dog

  • Your clicker and treats OR Your dog’s favourite toy

 Method:

Level 1

1.     Show your dog your toy.  Tease him and get him excited.  If you are going to use the clicker and treats instead of a toy, YOU need to be interesting and exciting.

2.    Suddenly hide the toy behind your back.

3.    Move away from your dog and cue him to lie down.

4.    As soon as he lies down, take out the toy and allow your dog to play with it OR click and toss a treat away from your dog.

5.    Cue your dog to drop the toy.  If he won’t drop it, gently restrain him by holding his collar and waiting for him to open his mouth and drop the toy.

6.    As soon as your dog drops the toy or takes the treat, you can start the game again.  Remember this is a FUN game and should be snappy and fast.

Level 2

Start the game when your dog isn’t paying attention.

Level 3

Start holding your arm straight up just before you cue your dog to lie down.  This will teach your dog a visual cue that he can see from a distance.

Keep playing this game for the life of your dog so that he will continue to lie down quickly when cued.
